Education

Texas families cannot thrive and we cannot sustain our economic growth if we don’t invest in the next generation of Texans.

Too many of our public schools and universities are overcrowded and underfunded. Far too many of our students never graduate from high school.

In the Senate, Wendy has fought to improve public schools by reducing the number of standardized tests students are forced to take, and by negotiating the first cost-of-living increase for retired teachers in more than a decade. In 2011, Wendy filibustered a budget that cut over $5 billion from education funding and she has continued to fight tirelessly to restore that funding to education.

Wendy is running for Governor so that every young person has access to the same opportunities that she did and so our future generations can make Texas even better than it is today.

Wendy’s Education Plan

Part I
Great Teachers: Great Texas

Great teachers, great schools, and access to affordable education can make or break a person’s hard-earned effort to make a better life for his or her family. We have kept our economy strong because Texans are the hardest working people in America. To continue our unmatched economic success, we must improve our schools. Great Teachers: Great Texas is Wendy Davis’ plan to develop, recruit, and retain the next generation of Texas teachers.

Part II
Great Pathways: Great Texas

Growing the Texas economy in the future requires a highly educated workforce, and that starts with providing Texas students more and better access to higher education. One of the best ways to get students into college, to ensure that they graduate, and to reduce their out-of-pocket costs is to allow them to obtain college credit while in high school. Great Pathways: Great Texas is Wendy Davis’ plan to expand opportunities to college for Texas high school students.

Part III
Great Start: Great Texas

Every Texas child deserves a great academic start. An early education helps to ensure that students from all backgrounds begin to cultivate the skills that will last the rest of their lives. Wendy Davis knows that high-quality early education is the best investment we can make in the future of Texas. Great Start: Great Texas highlights Wendy Davis’ commitment to expanding pre-K and early childhood education to Texas children.

Part IV
Great Standards: Great Texas

Securing Texas’ economic future for all Texans means ensuring every student has access to a 21st century education. As the 2013 Austin Teacher of the Year wrote, “Teachers know that a student’s success is measured not by one test on one day, but by growth over the year.” That’s why “Great Standards: Great Texas” calls for less standardized testing and more teaching, with the resources needed to do it.

Strong Economy

Texas is a place where people come to find their dreams. People come here, work hard, start a family and buy a home. Texas is a land of opportunity and advancement. But under the current leadership in Austin, these opportunities could fall out of reach for too many Texans.

Wendy knows that we must put Texans first when we talk about jobs and economic growth in our state. We must strengthen our working Texas families in order to protect the Texas we love.

On the Fort Worth City Council, Wendy took the lead on economic development. Working with community, political, and business leaders, Wendy’s efforts yielded $260 million in new investment, thousands of jobs, and revitalized communities.

As Governor, Wendy will work to make Texas the national leader in jobs that pay enough to raise families. She will work to make sure Texas remains a leader in oil and natural gas, but also a leader in renewable energy like wind and solar.

In the Senate, she authored a bill to put “Texas Jobs First” requiring the state government, when possible, to give Texas companies the first opportunity at contracts, and passed legislation requiring the Department of Transportation to grant preference to local contractors for certain Texas road projects.

Wendy is running for Governor to protect our working Texas families, increase investment in public schools, and fix our infrastructure to create jobs and strengthen neighborhoods all across Texas.

“Texans deserve better than failed leaders who dole out favors to friends and cronies behind closed doors. Texas has waited too long for a Governor who knows that quid pro quo shouldn’t be the status quo.”

Government Accountability

Wendy Davis knows that no Texan should have to buy a place in our state’s future.

Insider deals, special interest tax breaks, and favors for political cronies: that’s not how we ought to be doing business in Texas. Some of our elected officials have turned state agencies and programs into their own personal piggy bank, granting favors to their friends, rewarding donors, and furthering their own interests.

In the Texas Senate, Wendy successfully championed legislation requiring corporations that receive government subsidies to return the money if they fail to meet their obligations. She supports measures to root out corruption and waste from government agencies. And she supports changes in the state budgeting process that ensure that taxpayers can see how every dollar is spent.

Veterans

Wendy Davis believes our fellow Texans in uniform deserve respect and support when they come home. Our veterans should have access to education, get credit for the training that they received while in the service, and be welcomed back into the workforce in Texas.

Wendy has worked to make sure that veterans, service members, and their families are provided every opportunity for a quality education. This includes college tuition exemptions, more college counselors available to help veterans, and strong support for Hazlewood benefits.

Our military offers some of the best job training in the world. In the Senate, Wendy helped change a law to require state agencies to provide credit towards occupational licenses for job-relevant training our veterans received in the military.

Wendy Davis has pushed for and supported policies that would create jobs for our service men and women upon their re-entry into civilian life. In the 83rd Legislature, Senator Davis supported the establishment of the Veteran Entrepreneur Program, and wrote and co-sponsored laws to make it easier for service members to get their trucking, plumbing, and electrician licenses.

As Governor, Wendy will continue to fight for those who fought for us. Whether it’s job training, mental health counseling, or funding for existing services, Wendy will continue to support programs for our veterans.
